the frustrating age of technology
oh, i love technology but not as much as you you see...
ok, so we may not realize we love technology, but we all do. it's just our life nowadays in the good ol' US of A. my question (actually nikki's question) is why in this age of technology, if we can create missiles that can get around the world in 30 minutes and kill one person, can we not keep cell phones connected? We have bunker busting bombs...why not basement busting cell phones? one that could work when i hit that obscure unconnected divot outside of mamma sita's in Bennet, NE. Come on, scientists around the world. I'm calling on you to solve this inescapable problem - put technology to good use connecting people. i don't know how cell phones should work, just that they should. - it is after all the age of technology.

When you, or anyone else for that matter makes a call on a cellular phone, the signal travels to a cell tower before a connection is made.
While solar flares and broken handsets can often cause dropped calls, a defunct or congested cell tower - or too few or no cell towers in the region - can also cause the phone's signal to fade into the black.
The good news is, SRI International is working on an embedded software for cell phones called PacketHop. The concept is pretty simple, you lose connection to a tower the signal starts to bounce from cell phone to cell phone until it finds its way back to a tower, and assuming there are enough cell phones between you and another tower, say goodbye to your dropped calls. The concept isn't flawless, but it really does have potential.
